Our Story

Leaving the NHS After Nearly 40 Years

A Celebration, Not a Goodbye

In 1986, I started my training at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. I was 18, idealistic, and had absolutely no idea that the patients I met, their families, their stories, their hardships, their courage would shape every single part of who I became.

Nearly four decades later, I’m doing something I genuinely never pictured: stepping away. Not because my commitment has faded, far from it,  but because it’s time to look after my own health and pace of life for a change.

Before I go, I want to acknowledge what these years have meant to me. The work has shaped me, stretched me, and changed me in ways I’m still discovering.

I had the privilege of standing alongside people on some of the most difficult days of their lives.

The moments that stay with me aren’t about what I did,  they’re about the people I met.I learned from families navigating devastating news.
I was humbled by the strength patients showed when life turned upside down.
And I found purpose in helping create a little clarity and steadiness when everything felt uncertain.

Those one-to-one moments – quiet conversations, tears and impossibly difficult choices- are the real heart of my career. Everything else I achieved was built on what those people taught me

Hunts Community Cancer Network (HCCN): My “What If?”

Back in 2013, something special happened. I didn’t just lead a new service – I invented one.

Hunts Community Cancer Network wasn’t just an innovation; it was a quiet revolution. I wanted patients to live their lives with more freedom and dignity, even with a cancer diagnosis. And we proved that by redesigning care around people’s actual lives, everything improves experience, outcomes, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, all of it.

Susan Moore was a patient who became my mentor. Her own passion and drive to help me deliver what the NHS couldn’t resulted in the most amazing charity that’s still going strong today – 10 years later, and I am proud to not just be the co-founder but also a trustee today, watching it thrive.

Strategic Leadership: Helping More People, Even If Less Visibly

In the last few years, my world shifted somewhat, leading clinical networks and clinical programmes for the East of England Cancer Alliance and representing the region nationally. The impact was quieter… but bigger.

COVID: Three Years Without a Day Off And No Regrets

When the pandemic hit, cancer didn’t stop. And neither did we. I worked every day for almost three years. It was brutal. It was relentless. But it was also one of the clearest reminders of why I joined the profession in the first place: When people need us, we show up.

Why It’s Time to Move On

Nursing, especially cancer nursing, asks you to give your heart away in small pieces, one patient at a time. After nearly 40 years, I know I’ve given everything I had, and I’m proud of that. Now it’s time to protect my own health and move into a new chapter that lets me support others in a different, more sustainable way. I’m not stopping. I’m redirecting.

What I Leave With?

Most of all, I leave grateful.
For every person who trusted me.
For every story shared.
For every lesson learned.
